New Standards for Ocean Drive Sidewalk Café Umbrellas:

part of Ocean Drive 10-point plan

As part of the 10 Point Plan to improve Ocean Drive, new standards are being implemented for umbrellas at outdoor cafés between 5th and 15th Streets. The City has already moved to require most sidewalk café tables be moved from the east side of the Ocean Drive sidewalk to sit against the buildings on the west side in order to eliminate the “gauntlet” for pedestrians. (Exceptions have been made for instances where tables would block building entrances and exits.) Now, there are new standards for café umbrellas: a maximum of three umbrellas may be zipped together with “rain gutters” permitted between them. “Colorless and transparent roll-down tarps” may be attached to the umbrellas but only in event of rain or strong wind.

The ordinance passed with an amendement to allow café owners an extra 30 days to renew their sidewalk café permits in order to comply with the new law.
