Crumbling Cement from Deauville Hotel Forces Partial Beachwalk Closure:

Latest incident more fuel for Miami Beach’s case for “demolition by neglect”

The Deauville Hotel is falling apart. Literally. As a result of falling concrete from the abandoned building, the City has closed a portion of the Beachwalk at 67th Street including the perimeter directly behind the hotel until further notice. Miami Beach City Manager Jimmy Morales informed Commissioners in a letter on February 26 that the Building Department has issued a violation to the owners “requiring a remedy to provide pedestrian protection by Friday morning to safely secure the premises in order [to] reopen the Beachwalk. Should the Deauville not comply, the Building Department will secure contractors to safeguard the area. The City Manager and City Attorneys have been in contact with ownership at the Deauville Hotel.” There was no word on if that had happened at the time of our publication.

This is just the latest in the saga that has pitted the owners and City against each other. The two sides are locked in a court battle with the City asking for the appointment of a receiver for the shuttered hotel and a temporary injunction to force the hotel’s owners to protect the historic property.

The City is accusing the owners of “demolition by neglect” after they failed to make necessary repairs following an electrical fire in July 2017. The hotel at 6701 Collins Avenue sustained further damage from Hurricane Irma a few months later. It has remained closed since the fire. There have been “numerous incidents involving trespassers and the public gaining access to the structure due to Deauville’s failure to secure the property,” according to the court filing.

The 538-room oceanfront hotel was designed by architect Melvin Grossman and constructed in 1957. The Deauville may be best known for hosting the Beatles performance on The Ed Sullivan Show in February 1964.
