Moshi Moshi Chef/Owner Toshio Furihata and James Recio, restaurant consultant and former General Manager of the now-closed SushiSamba on Lincoln Road, are planning a new sushi restaurant on Ocean Terrace in Miami Beach's North Beach. The two filed plans with the Historic Preservation Board for a “contemporary Asian restaurant” on the ground floor of the St. Tropez condo building.
The proposed Sushi Bichi will occupy a primarily outdoor space entered through a Torii, the familiar traditional Japanese gate. Because of the smaller interior space (968 sq. ft.), Akerman Miami Office Managing Partner Neisen Kasdin noted in the HPB application, the largest portion of the restaurant will be located in 4,181 sq. ft. of outdoor space.
The owners are seeking a variance to operate the proposed outdoor bar counter from noon until midnight Sunday through Thursday and until 1:00 am on Friday and Saturday. Under current zoning regulations, outdoor bar counters adjacent to residential apartments (in this case, the St. Tropez) may operate from 8:00 am until 8:00 pm. “The existing regulations permit accessory outdoor bar counters to operate for a 12-hour period,” Kasdin wrote. “Applicant is proposing to shift the 12 operating hours so that the accessory outdoor bar counter can be open until 1:00 am on Friday and Saturday and midnight on the other five days of the week when the bar counter would be most utilized.”
“Although the bar is outdoors, it is not in an area that is open to the sky. There is either a canvas canopy or solid building above all portions of the proposed outdoor bar counter,” Kasdin wrote. “Also, as required by City Code, the accessory outdoor bar counter will not be visible from the right of way. Dense planting in the form of Green Island Ficus will be located along the entire perimeter of the outdoor seating area.”
The location at 7330 Ocean Terrace, on the southwest corner of 74th Street and Ocean Terrace, is next to Sandor Scher and Alex Blavatnik’s proposed development for Ocean Terrace. Scher wrote in a letter of support to the HPB, “Their business will be a much needed draw for consumers to come to Ocean Terrace and it will begin the process of bringing a level of vitality and pedestrian activity to Ocean Terrace.”
The restaurant is designed by James Mackenzie of ArchitectureWorks.
Recio is a restaurant consultant and former General Manager of SushiSamba on Lincoln Road which closed in December. Toshio Furihata’s Moshi Moshi has three locations including one at 1448 Washington Avenue and two in Miami.
The item is scheduled to be heard by the HPB in February. Full application here.
