Businesses Benefitting from Convention Center Reopening:

Anecdotes of “sold out” inventory

After being mostly closed for more than two years, the Miami Beach Convention Center reopened for a full schedule of shows last fall. As hoped, some of the biggest beneficiaries are the surrounding businesses.

At this week’s City Commission budget meeting, City Manager Jimmy Morales said after hosting the Million Dollar Roundtable meeting in June, “The Nike store called a week or two later saying they ran out of merchandise so ‘Please call us in advance and let us know what’s coming.’”

Miami Beach Director of Tourism and Culture Matt Kenny said, “Restaurants as well saying ‘Can you let us know because we were lined up down the road on Lincoln Road’ and they need to order more food.”

Morales said Million Dollar Roundtable (MDRT) “was the first event to use every square inch of the building.” MDRT is a trade association of insurance brokers and financial advisors. Nearly 12,000 people attended this year’s annual meeting at the Convention Center.

Kenny said attendees represented 65 countries and “65% of those people were here for the first time so it’s exactly what we want.”

Morales said there’s also been a bump in parking revenue.  “This fiscal year, the two garages that are serving the building, 17th Street and Penn [Avenue] are a million dollars up over last year.”

Kenny said approximately 34 events have taken place in the building so far this year with about 165,000 people coming through the doors. And, he said, “2020 is looking very full for the Convention Center.”
