Venetian Causeway to Remain Closed Through at Least Saturday:

More repairs anticipated in near future

UPDATED Saturday, 8 am: The bridge has reopened to traffic.

The Venetian Causeway at Purdy Avenue was closed east and westbound for two days while the City made emergency repairs on a wastewater main break, the third break in the area within the last 30 days. In addition to this repair, the City has begun an emergency procurement process to take care of further work needed along Dade Boulevard on a pipe that is described as being in poor condition.

The most recent break which affected a 12-inch section of pipe occurred Thursday afternoon, closing off access to and from the Venetian Islands.

A precautionary swim advisory for the waters adjacent to Maurice Gibb Park, including the Collins Canal as well as the area south of the Venetian Causeway remains in effect. The kayak launch at Maurice Gibb Park will be closed until further notice.

As noted by City Manager Alina Hudak in a letter to the Mayor and City Commissioners, “This is the third rupture of the sewage force main in the same general location in the last 30 days.”

In addition to this repair, Hudak said, “the Public Works Department is preparing an emergency procurement to replace approximately 2,700 LF of pipe along Dade Blvd which is in poor condition and has suffered multiple ruptures in the past 24 months.”

“While the emergency procurement is being expedited, the global shortage of raw material is creating significant lead times,” Hudak noted. “It is expected that the emergency project will commence in the first quarter of 2022.” In the meantime, she said, the Public Works Departemnt will continue to monitor the pipe.
